UNDATED Seating Collection: beyond the conflict between classic and contemporary.
INTRO
Welcoming the ancient in the contemporary and shaping memory through current gestures.
In our research the conflict between the contemporary and the classic generates a continuous methodological and formal dialectic. UNDATED is a solid wood seat conceived as a neoclassical sculpture action: redesigning the past by relieving it of the weight of formal requirements and imagining it with an evocative and imperfect output. Being in the present and the past at the same time has led us to explore a personal version of the connection between distant historical times.
We combined our conceptual vocation and formal linearity with a skilful craftsmanship capable of shaping the material without fearing the relationship with it, indeed, welcoming its intrinsic characteristics, enhancing them and pushing them beyond known boundaries.
The contrast between "tempestas" and "tranquillitas" (citing Johann Joachim Winckelmann's thought about art) has generated a static and visibly heavy volume, a bold form with a reassuring and massive appearance just like the material it is made of.
UNDATED, THE SEAT
UNDATED is a seat designed in continuity with the human body that it welcomes: an accompaniment of the legs in the act of sitting, an instrument of visceral connection between body and ground as happens to a tree that sinks into the earth or to an architecture that anchors itself to the ground of the city.
The final section of the seat reveals an interior made of the same material as the external skin and allows the interlocutor to guess the shape of the missing part just as when, walking among the ruins of ancient Rome, we imagine shapes and geometries that complete the single isolated fragments.
UNDATED, THE SEATING COLLECTION
It’s a collection of three curvy seats: low seat, high seat and linear bench.
Its body is made of solid wood assembled and turned by hand. The final finish, of an intense black color and with three-dimensional veins to show essence and surface processing, is made with the Japanese technique Shou Sugi Ban which consists in carbonizing the surface of the wood with a flame to make it more resistant to atmospheric agents, to attack. parasites, water and fire itself.
Oak recovery, craftsmanship and charred finish with the shou sugi ban technique by Studio F, an artisan carpentry based in Turin (Italy).
