TIME, FRAMED. The trajectory of a year as described through material, color and light. A measure of the immeasurable. A frame for that which has no form.

A collaboration between Czech-America artist Marta Abbott and Naessi.

Marta Abbott and Naessi Studio met at the beginning of 2020. Marta’s artistic vision and Naessi’s creative identity intersect in a multidisciplinary undertaking which proposes the role of design as a methodical one which establishes the foundation, the framework upon which artistic expression may take place freely, intentionally and impactfully.

-

Time, Framed. A subversion of an established, scientific definition for an instrument of measure. In this case a calendar created to mark each month through the juxtaposition of a structured system against immeasurable, intuitive elements that reflect the poetry of time as well as its alchemical nature.

Each translucent page of the calendar corresponds to a month of the year. As the paper allows for the passage of light, it creates a new juxtaposition of form and color with the turning of each page through the ink applied and the graphic elements present. Twelve months, hanging one in front of the other, creating layers of time and color, display not only the present, but also shadowy traces of past and future. Time, Framed. gives dimension to that which cannot be measured and frames that which has no true form.

Time, Framed, exists as an object suspended, which allows its presence and appearance to be influenced by light and other atmospheric elements, allowing for interaction with its surroundings. It is comprised of 12 translucent pages of Fedrigoni Golden Star K paper, one for each month of the year 2021. It hangs on a light-weight, handmade brass frame which is unfinished, so as to reflect usage and the passage of time. Every month tells a unique story through the graphic elements chosen, and through the alchemical, unpredictable nature of the natural inks that Marta uses either to emphasize or obscure the days, and to reflect the characteristics of each period of the year.

Fedrigoni Golden Star K, Extra White paper, 200 g/m2, 46 x 68 cm, digital offset printing in black and white on front only, 4+0 color. / Unfinished, soldered brass frame. / Atramentum - Colour from Nature, natural inks produced by Marta Abbott with the consultation of Naessi Studio.
