FÒLIA, exercises in lightness
We chose to make a connection with the Lake Como Design Festival 2023 during which we presented FOLIA, a formal, conceptual and technical exploration around three-dimensional surfaces.
The FOLIA research focuses on the three-dimensional surfaces of the natural world: they are seemingly fragile because of their lightness and yet they are endowed with great mechanical and structural strength.
In this design we played freely with the undulating surface of FOLIA. The result is an abstract composition that contains input for possible new product types but defines none specifically. The undulating surfaces flank each other by tangency and overlap like the light leaves of a plant growing in search of light and air.
We have interpreted, therefore, lightness in two different ways: on the one hand, the physical (perceived and real) lightness of the subjects represented with their low-thickness undulating surfaces, and on the other hand, lightness as an aesthetic practice and thus as a quality of methodological approach. Our training as designers, in fact, leads us to have a superstructure that has a tendency to filter the subjects we deal with. Making experiences away from the constraints of concreteness and feasibility, processing objects that are not fully resolved and partially dysfunctional, leads us into an unexplored space, a creative dimension in which to practice pure exercises of lightness.
